I was very privileged to spend a morning recently at Roger Varian's historic Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, which was an unforgettable experience. After watching second lot and having breakfast, I headed to Welney for a couple of hours birding.
As a member of the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust, access was included for free. In addition, I was treated to some flyovers by American F-15's which the birds didn't flinch over. Star attraction was a family of Black-winged Stilts which had successfully bred and flying between two different reserve pools.
I did manage a couple of bonus year ticks with views of Spoonbill, Ruff, Whooper Swan in addition to Black-tailed Godwits, Little Egret, Marsh Harrier and Hobby.
