The draw of the breeding Bee-eaters in Cumbria was calling however an eight hour round trip with work the next day ended those thoughts so we headed north west for a Gull double.

First port of call was Pennington Flash where an adult Sabine’s Gull was showing very well 15 metres from the shoreline. An amazing dainty gull was taking small bit of bread from the captivated audience. You could note the longer forked tail and pale tip on the beak. It was good to see all the birders and photographers behaving however I did note some birders parking in unauthorised areas to save the whole £1.20 parking.

Our next stop was thirty minutes north to Preston docks where a Ring-billed Gull were waiting for us just below our parking position. A proper easy twitch ! The bird was showing extremely well, so well in fact that we were soon watching the colony of Common Terns that had bred there. It was great watching the juveniles taking food and taking their first flights.

We sadly hit traffic on the way home adding an extra forty minutes to the journey however myself and Paul had a good rattle and laugh in the traffic.
