No gold medal waders

 Ringed Plover
 Green Woodpecker
Common Buzzard
Juvenile Shelduck
Grey Heron on old works lagoon

The lack of variation of waders was finally broken last week when an adult Ringed Plover was present for a day before continuing it’s migration. A couple of Snipe have returned to Pophills which could be seen around the island which is increasing in size during this prolonged dry spell. Pophills is looking good for a Greenshank, a bird I’m yet to record at the pits. Historically this was the most common wader on the site before the restoration started. Most definitely my site bogey bird. What’s annoying is there is one regularly seen up the road at Morton Bagot.

Other waders recorded over the weekend were three Lapwing, eight Green Sandpipers and two Common Sandpipers. I didn’t manage to get a count on Sunday as they had all been flushed by a new dog walker. On a positive note I did see all five Shelduck juveniles who remain very photo shy but I did manage to get one record shot. The south lagoons continue to attract regular groups of House Martins and Swallows however the local Swifts look to have left us for the summer.

The finch flocks appear to be building and there were over 100 Linnets perched up above once of the barley fields.

I’m off to Madrid for a short break so will hopefully catch up with a few species around the Spanish capital with a bit of luck. Hopefully my next pit blog will be a wader fest………….here’s hoping.
