Happy New Year to everyone. I saw in the New Year weekend by undertaking a nice selection of walks close to home. Bredon Hill was like a winter wonderland as we started to climb. A very cold Stonechat on top was the only bird of note.
The best birds observed were 4 White-fronted, 2 Goosander & a Pink-footed Goose on the main pit at Salford Priors. 6 Snipe & a Jack Snipe were my best counts since last winter, yet far from the giddy heights when we used to get over 20 Jacks every Sunday.
The field next to the A46 nearest to Broom is by far the best area for birding. The field is packed with finches and thrushes. It seems the Chaffinch flock have really made the area their home whilst other sightings have included Linnet, Brambling, Goldfinch, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting and Siskin. Quite a bounty.....Between myself & the Squire we noted 57 species on the opening weekend.
